"Barakoa: The African Masquerade," celebrated cultural diversity through masks displays, music and dance April 26, 2015 at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Participants representing Latin American, North American, Caribbean and African cultures came together after a years' worth of collaboration to present their masks and costumes they made themselves during the 2014 workshop led by the Baobab Cultural Center.

Ascension Garden, a Holy Sepulchre Cemetery located in Henrietta, held its first annual Luminary Lighting of Remembrance Dec. 20, 2015. Families of those buried at the cemetery came to see the lighting of 1,500 luminaries around the mausoleum and to light candles in remembrance of their loved ones. Participants in the Holy Cross CYO Program's basketball skills camp have brought in donated shoes and also expect to raise more than $1,000 to supply children in Uganda with basketball equipment. The idea for the camp and fundraiser came from coach and parent John Nkugwa, a native of Uganda who has regularly brought basketballs with him on return trips home. Nkugwa's ultimate goal is to someday build a basketball court for the children in Uganda, and spread the game of basketball throughout the country. (Courier video by Jeff Witherow)

The Rochester Hispanic Heritage Committee added a new activity to this year's Hispanic Heritage Month schedule. The first ever Latino Golf Tournament was held Aug. 29, 2015 at Braemar Country Club in Spencerport. The tournament, which raised money to benefit a scholarship fund for Hispanic youth, was an early event for Hispanic Heritage Month. The month-long celebration of Hispanic culture officially kicks off Sept. 15 and runs until Oct. 15.
